Gardening
Plant guidance here is based on our own gardens in the hardiness zones we name. Your results will differ with climate, soil, light, water and timing. Before you plant, check what is suitable and legal in your area — some plants are invasive or restricted in some regions.
Plants, people and pets
Many common garden and house plants are toxic if eaten, and some cause skin reactions. Never eat a plant, berry, mushroom or seed unless you are certain of its identity. Keep plants and any garden chemicals away from children and animals, and contact a doctor, a poison control centre or a vet immediately if something is swallowed.
Chemicals and treatments
Always read and follow the label on any fertiliser, pesticide or treatment. The label is the law, and it overrides anything we write.
DIY, tools and structures
Projects on this site are described as we did them. Power tools, ladders, paint, adhesives and electricity are dangerous. Use the correct safety equipment, work within your ability, and get a licensed professional for anything structural, electrical, gas or plumbing related. Check your local building codes and, if you rent, your tenancy agreement, before you change anything.
Products and prices
Prices, availability and product specifications change constantly. We describe what we paid at the time of writing; confirm the current details with the retailer before buying.
No liability
You use the information on this site at your own risk. To the fullest extent permitted by law we accept no liability for any loss, damage or injury that results from following anything published here.
