Gardening & Home Decor
Grow something.
Then make it home.
Our Quest Begins is a gardening and home decor site written by two people who are still doing the work — a kitchen garden in North Carolina, an old house in Colorado. We publish the guides we wanted when we started: what to plant, what to buy, what it costs, and what to do when it goes wrong.
Real Life Testing
We grow, try and test in real gardens and real homes.
Beginner Friendly
Simple steps, clear advice, no jargon.
Budget Conscious
Beautiful spaces and bountiful harvests without overspending.
Practical & Honest
What works, what doesn’t, all in one place.
Where to begin
Pick the part of the house you are standing in
Four places to start. Each one opens into step-by-step guides written for the space, budget and light you actually have.
Gardening
Grow-your-own guides for real gardens and real schedules — vegetables, flowers, houseplants, soil and the pests that turn up uninvited.
Home Decor
Decorating advice for homes people actually live in — layouts, colour, lighting and the small changes that make a room feel finished.
DIY & Projects
Weekend projects with a clear payoff — what to buy, what it costs and where people usually go wrong.
Outdoor Living
The space where the garden and the house meet — patios, porches, and the structures that make outside feel like another room.

Latest guides
Everything we publish, newest first.
The first guides are being written now.
New posts land here as soon as they are published — in the meantime, the category pages show what is coming.
How we work
Four steps, in this order
It is the same sequence whether you are filling a raised bed or a living room.
Start with the space you have
A balcony, a rental bedroom or half an acre — work out the light, the size and the budget before you buy anything. Most mistakes happen here.
Pick one project, finish it
One raised bed. One wall. Finishing something small teaches you more than planning something huge.
Learn what your conditions want
Your frost dates, your light, your floor plan. Advice that ignores your conditions is just decoration.
Then grow it — and keep it alive
Watering, pruning, touch-ups and the seasonal reset. The maintenance is the part nobody writes down.
Who writes this
Meet the two people behind Our Quest Begins
No anonymous byline, no content farm. Claire grows the plants, Wyatt builds and decorates the rooms, and both of them write about what actually happened.
Claire Bennett
Gardening Editor
Claire Bennett writes the gardening side of Our Quest Begins. She learned to grow food in her grandmother’s Ohio vegetable patch, spent four seasons working weekends at a community garden, and now keeps a 400-square-foot kitchen garden and far too many houseplants in Asheville, North Carolina (Zone 7a). She writes the guides she wanted when she started: what to plant, when to plant it, and what to do when it goes sideways in July.

Wyatt Nolan
Home & DIY Editor
Wyatt Nolan covers home decor and the build-it-yourself half of the site. He spent six years in a cabinet shop before he started writing, and has renovated two older houses room by room — including one kitchen he would do very differently a second time. He writes about layout, colour and lighting for rooms on a budget, and about the weekend projects that are genuinely worth the Saturday.

Our promise
What you can expect from every guide
Tested, not theorised
Every guide comes out of a real garden or a real room — including the parts that failed the first time.
Plain instructions
Plant lists, measurements, costs and timing. No filler, no ten paragraphs before the actual answer.
Built for beginners
You should not need to already know the vocabulary to follow along. When we use a term, we explain it.
Got a question about your garden or your room?
Send it over. Reader questions are where a lot of these guides come from — if you are stuck on a plant that keeps dying or a room that will not come together, tell us what you are working with.
